Basic Authentication Migration

Why is this happening?

Microsoft will implement a change to the less secure Basic Authentication service. They will be retiring Basic Authentication as a viable sign-in method for all Microsoft customers. Although not heavily used at Penn State, there are still some mobile devices and older email clients that use basic authentication as an authentication method. Basic authentication allows users to connect to a mailbox using only a username and a password and is not as secure as modern authentication.

When is this happening?

Microsoft will be disabling this authentication method on October 1, 2022.  Penn State IT will be notifying anyone who is using Basic Authentication starting April 18, 2022 and and will be disabling it in our environment on August 31, 2022.

What do I have to do?

Easiest Transition:  Outlook on the Web

Login to Outlook on the Web and access will be immediate and secure.

Install the Outlook Desktop Application

If you have Outlook 2016 or newer, no action will be needed.

Any version prior to 2016, will need to be upgraded by clicking the Install Office button on the Office Home Page.

Outlook Mobile Apps

There is an Outlook mobile app for both iOS and Android which comply with the new secure login requirement.  You can get the app from the iOS App Store or Android Play Store.

Mac Devices (Mac Mail)

If your Mac is running Mac OS 10.14 or newer, Mac Mail and Calendar will continue to work. It is recommended that you delete and re-add your account to avoid service disruption.  Click here for instructions on creating a new account.

If you are running Mac OS 10.13 or older, you will need to upgrade your Mac OS. If you cannot upgrade your Mac OS, you can switch to using Outlook for Mac or Outlook on the Web.

iOS Devices

If your iPhone or iPad is running iOS 11 or newer, the Mail and Calendar apps will continue to work. If they do stop working, it is recommended that you delete and re-add your account. Click here for instructions on adding a new account.

Android Devices

The native mail app on Android does not support the new Modern Authentication method. Please install the Outlook for Android app or you can use the Gmail app on the Android device.

Other Email Clients

Thunderbird

Alpine

For any other client not listed, please check with the application developer to see if they have a version that supports Modern Authentication
